Summary of Events:
When we left our adventurers last, Tommy had presented the party with a rather tempting offer:
Highjack the monk’s boat and put an end to the supply of Red Claw. Succeed and the collective wealth of Misthelm is theirs to keep.
Eyes twinkling with dreams of riches, the party agrees to help Tommy save what is left of his town. If their dreams from the night before hold any merit, the ongoings of that volcano have something to do with everything that’s happened so far.
Chonka recounts her knowledge of the deadly forest of jagged rocks that surround the island. They’re going to need that boat.
In the last moments waiting for the signal from Tommy, Rota suggests that he and Ren sneak as close to the boat as possible while the others camouflage themselves as part of the Wasted horde. They’ll spring the ambush as the crates are being unloaded. A firebolt can be seen streaking upward in the distance. It’s time.
They scramble through the same hole in the fence that they entered through the night before. Azu, Rota, and Ren spring up onto the rooftop and make their way toward the docks.
Ren falters, smashing his knee on the roof as he ascends, drawing some unwanted attention. They’re quickly distracted by the Minor Illusion of a rabbit running into some nearby bushes. As the Wasted chase the illusion, the adventurers in disguise use this opportunity to start their journey toward the dock.
They head southward and see what is drawing the attention of an increasing number of enemies. Tommy is screaming from the top of a house to the south and pouring the red liquor over the edge to a mob of ravenous townsfolk below. The distraction is as effective as it is horrifying to watch.
They arrive at the dock a short time later and prepare the ambush. Ren and Rota float out to the end of the dock and hide underneath the end of it on a floating block of ice. The others lumber about the edge of the dock in disguise. A boat approaches in the distance. The monks are here.
By the time the boat arrives at the dock, the well-distracted horde can hardly be heard in the distance. Confident that the Wasted was on the east side of town by now, the party aims their undivided attention toward the ambush set to spring at any moment.
The monks begin to unload cases of liquor onto the dock, unsuspecting of what lies just beneath their feet.
In the warmth of the coastal sun, the icy block underneath Rota’s feet begins to melt and he slips. As one of the monks starts to look in his direction, Rota Misty Steps to the back of the boat. Swiftly recognizing Rota’s intent, Ren casts Invisibility on him at the last second.
A white-hot beam of bright pink arcane energy erupts from Rota’s chest. Several monks are knocked backward and two are knocked off the boat as the Ro-Tah Beam rips across the length of the boat. Wings spring out from underneath the robes of one of the monks and it flies upward, revealing itself as a winged kobold sorcerer.
The assailants start to fire off Firebolts at Rota as Chonka leaps off of the dock in a screaming, downward-plunging glaive attack. She plunges her weapon straight through the chest of one of the kobolds in the water.
Ren throws one of his twin ebony daggers at a monk on the boat, disappears in a flurry of raven feathers, and reappears at the dagger as it lands true. He carves up the kobold and springs back to the safety of the dock.
One of the flying kobolds launches a Fireball in Rota’s direction and the boat is set ablaze. In the chaos of the ambush, the party fails to notice that small groups of the Wasted have started to break away from the horde, drawn toward the dock by the ongoing commotion.
Azu follows Chonka’s lead and leaps forward to launch his own assault. Fire erupts from his fingertips as he casts Burning hands toward two kobolds below. Both are killed by the inferno.
One of the last monks dives into the water and starts to swim away in a desperate escape. Rota leaps forward to restrain the remaining monk in chains.
Ren casts Shape Water to quell the flames that were quickly spreading across their escape route. As the flames die out, the adventurers turn to notice an increasingly large group of the Wasted has reached the docks.
It’s. Time. To. Go.
They scramble onto the boat and begin to shove off. Ren buys them a few spare minutes with a Silent Image of two monks tossing barrels of liquor inland. A few Wasted pile into the illusion as the others race toward the end of the dock. Azu draws an arrow, sets it on fire, nocks it, and carefully aims upward with calculated intent. Ren grins with devilish approval as the arrow soars through the air toward the Wasted that have begun to tear through the crates of Red Claw on the end of the dock. The arrow lands true and the horde erupts in flames. The adventurers begin their journey to the island and collect themselves as the flaming dock disappears into the distance.
During their trip to the island, Chonka sings a salty sea shanty. Azu and Ren pass some time with a contest of dexterity. Before long, the party begins to enter the dangerous forest of jagged rocks Chonka spoke of previously. Large whirlpools of water threaten their approach to the island but Chonka’s naval skills prevail. Smoke can be seen steadily billowing from the island volcano in the distance as the boat makes landfall.
A singular path tunnels through a dense island jungle that separates the party from their destination. The adventurers begin their advance, dragging their kobold prisoner behind them. They breach through the other side of the forest and their nostrils are filled with the smell of sulfur and brimstone. Before them is a blackened and ashy volcano with a wide chasm that surrounds it.
On the other side of the bridge that spans the chasm is a landing with several entrances into the living mountain. The entrances to the volcano are protected by over a dozen red kobolds, some of which are on top of several towers that litter the entire width of the landing.
They take in the sight laid before them and formulate a plan for approach. Recalling their dream of Tuckerthranx’s molten factory from the night before, they can be sure that a gruesome danger lies ahead…
Session End.
